Liberian President Joseph Nyuma Boakai signs War Crimes Court order

Updated: Jul 10

Liberian President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr has signed an Executive Order (#131) on Thursday, May 2, 2024 establishing the "Office of War and Economic Crimes Court of Liberia."

As Liberia moves toward an era of accountability and justice, we want to thank the President for his wisdom and courage in making this decision.

The WCC will endeavor to bring justice for the victims of the atrocities committed during Liberia’s protracted civil wars of 1989 - 2003 that completely destroyed the nation's public infrastructure and the killing of more than a quarter million people by rebel factions.

The most notorious of these rebel factions included the National Patriotic Front of Liberia (NPFL), led by jailed former Liberia president, Charles Taylor. The NPFL in it's early formation was also sponsored heavily by former president, Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who served as a two term president from 2006 - 2011.

Other major rebel groups include Senator Prince Johnson's Independent-NPFL, whose forces captured former president Samuel K. Doe and tortured him to death, while making a video record of it and drinking beer on camera. Others include George Boley, Thomas Yaya Nimley, Sekou Demate Konneh (LURD), ULIMO J and ULIMO leaders (Alhaji Kromah and Roosevelt Johnson, who are both deceased), amongst others.

We appreciate all activists and friends of Liberia who have been in the vanguard advocating for justice for the past 20 years.

Bravo to the valiant People of Liberia.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
